I am Apollo. I have watched Odysseus’ quest from the very beginning. I still think about it now, and I see that he has done many things in his quest that has upset the gods, as he tries to make up for every mistake he had made. I may have assisted him in his death match with the suitors, but that does not mean I’m impressed about everything he’d accomplished on his quest.
As he did not listen to the prophecy that I gave to Tiresias, Odysseus and his men landed where the cattle of the Sun God live. As soon as Helios and I heard that our sacred kine had been eaten, we knew Odysseus and his men had to be punished; however, to keep Odysseus to the prophecy that he was given, I asked Helios to spare Odysseus, for he had only been asleep the entire time, and had no idea what happened. Thus the gods allowed him and him alone to survive.
At the time Odysseus had taken the challenge with the axe sockets, I knew too well that he would be asking for my help. Still enraged about my kine, I thought this through: Should I help him? Why would I help him after his men ate my kine? My foretold prophecy did not restrict me from aiding him, yet neither did it say that my kine would be slain. However, I eventually put my concerns aside me, and gave Odysseus the strength and accuracy needed to kill Antinous with a single arrow.
As for the rest of his journey, I simply watched. I was surprised to hear that Zeus and Athena would aid Odysseus in the end of his quest. I had thought we all still held our grudges against him. Odysseus, in the end, was a brave hero. He did his best to be a good leader and stayed true to his quest. I don’t care what the other Gods thought of him; I believe he is one of Olympus’ greatest heroes.
